Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Expected in Southeast Georgia This Mother's Day Weekend

Residents should prepare for potential flooding and severe weather conditions

As Mother's Day weekend approaches, residents of Southeast Georgia should brace for a series of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall that could lead to localized flooding.

The National Weather Service has indicated that an upper-level trough extending from southeast Canada to the ArkLaTex region is bringing moist southwesterly flow over the Southeast. This atmospheric setup is expected to trigger widespread showers and thunderstorms starting Friday afternoon and continuing through the weekend. 41nbc.com

On Friday, temperatures are forecasted to reach the low to mid-80s, with dew points in the mid to upper 60s, creating conditions conducive to thunderstorm development. Some of these storms may become strong, producing gusty winds and hail. The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of Middle and East Georgia under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe weather. 41nbc.com

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to persist into Mother's Day weekend. An upper-level low is projected to stall along the Gulf Coast, pumping warm, moist air over Georgia and resulting in daily chances for showers and thunderstorms. The heaviest rainfall is anticipated on Sunday and Monday, with potential accumulations of 3 to 5 inches or more. This significant rainfall increases the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage. walb.com

In Savannah, the rainfall deficit for 2025 stands at 6.65 inches. While the upcoming rain may help alleviate this shortfall, the intensity and duration of the expected precipitation could lead to flooding concerns.

Residents are advised to stay informed by monitoring local weather updates and to exercise caution during this period of inclement weather. It's essential to have an emergency plan in place and to avoid driving through flooded areas.

Looking ahead, the wet pattern is expected to continue into early next week, with widespread rain chances on Monday and scattered showers with storms on Tuesday. Drier conditions and sunnier skies are anticipated by Wednesday.

Stay safe and take necessary precautions during this period of active weather.
